David Smith and Johnny Pursley were the big winners last weekend

Two big shows headlined last weekend’s racing action in Upstate South Carolina.

The FASTRAK series rolled into Travelers Rest Speedway with David Smith picking up the win. Smith has been rock solid this year, especially at T-R.

Just a few weeks ago, Smith lowered the track qualifying record on his way to a flag to flag victory. With last week’s race, Smith has three wins at Travelers Rest and one at Buffalo. His team-mate at Hi-Bridge Automotive Racing Blake Bentley also has a win this season at Travelers Rest. A couple of weeks ago when this duo joined us on Droppin’ the Hammer, they talked about eating brownies that Blake’s grandmother sent to the track. Blake, tell her to keep them coming!!

Cherokee Speedway did have problems Saturday night. The transponders did not want to pick up correctly; the Extreme Four guys got a little wild, Street Stock Four had bonus money, Brandon Harrelson came from the rear to win Young Guns, James Abernathy was able to shake off the bad luck streak he has been under to win Pure Stock, and Johnny Pursley scored his first ever East Series win.

The Super race had several cautions with two resulting in red flags, then during the second red flag the lights on the speedway went out. This was one time I was glad the red flag was waving. Overall, the racing intensified with each class, in fact the Pure Stock guys rolled off after the East show, and Abernathy, Perry Waters, and Mitch Sill were three wide for several laps.

This weekend, Travelers Rest will be hosting Sprint Cars. Folks, if you have never seen them race in person; you need to be at T-R Saturday night. Once these machines get to rolling, they don’t mind testing any tracks width. Four wide, five wide, and even six wide racing could greet fans at T-R this Saturday night.

I hope to get down to Anderson Motor Speedway soon. Sylvia Porter has given that track a facelift that will improve both the racing and the fans race experience. Randy Porter won the first Late Model race and fans a chomping at the bit in anticipation of the Supers next visit to AMS.
